“Light”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Give light and people will find the way.” — Ella Baker
The light flickered. Just for a second. A flash of brightness. Then it was gone.
Another flicker. Then darkness. Light for a moment longer. Then it was gone.
It took a deep breath. It could do this. It had to do this.
Another deep breath. Another flicker. Short, but stronger this time.
Brightness. Light in the dark. Hope.
Breath… Light… Breath… Light…
It opened its eyes. It did it. Light in the dark.
It shone, pouring its heart out for the world to see.
And slowly, they came. Hesitantly, at first, even though it reassured them with all the warmth it could give.
Still, they came. So it smiled.
Final Comments: I felt poetic today…
