“Life on Mercury”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: Mercury.
I never, in one million years, imagined that I would one day live on Mercury. Then again, I never, in one million years, imagined that Earth would be completely destroyed.
I was one of the lucky ones. One of the few lucky ones. I was already on a ship when it was announced that the asteroid was too big for there to be any chance of survival. It was just supposed to be a fun little field trip to introduce us to space travel. We weren’t ever supposed to lift off, nor were we supposed to travel all the way to Mercury to live there permanently. We weren’t supposed to see our world explode, along with all our loved ones.
Sure, I’m one of the lucky ones, but some say that it would’ve been better if the whole human race had been destroyed. Some say that we were supposed to die and become extinct. I can’t say that I agree or disagree with that. All I know is that we’re here now, so I guess we’d better make the most of it.
Final Comments: Just the thought of going to space freaks me out. Being surrounded by a giant vacuum… ugh. Nope.
