“Jump”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

He peers into the black hole, cape flapping in the wind.

“You have to jump!” I shout over the howling wind. “It’s the only way!”

Behind us, the horrific screech of the dragon echoes out. I spin around to see it twisting through the air, jaws wide as it creates yet another vacuum behind us.

“Jump!” I scream, running at him.

He turns at the last second and I crash into his chest. The force of my impact sends us both hurtling over the edge of the cliff. His fingers grip at my shirt, his nails occasionally grazing my skin underneath. His eyes open wide, the whites showing all around, as his mouth opens in a silent scream.

Another screech resounds behind us as the dragon releases its breath. The air explodes, propelling us forward. I squeeze my eyes shut and hold onto him as tight as I can as we go tumbling through open space.

Final Comments: I wanted to try creating the feeling of moving in slow motion in the middle. I feel like I need to work on my descriptions…
