Take Ten to Write

“It’s Nice To See You Smile”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

“Are you serious?” Iza spat, expelling both the sentence and a mouthful of korga flies at once. “At this point, I’ve eaten more flies than actual food.”

“Apparently they’re good for you. Gives you the ability to lift boulders or something,” Darmoth said, his voice muffled as he spoke through sealed lips to try to avoid suffering the same fate as his travelling companion. At Iza’s raised eyebrow, he added with a shrug, “At least, that’s what the korga meat vendor told me.”

The corner of Iza’s lips twitched up into the ghost of a smile.

“Ah!” Darmoth exclaimed, his mouth opening to let in a swarm of flies. Immediately, he began furiously spitting them out, swatting at the air in front of his mouth.

Iza couldn’t resist giving a small chuckle.

“As I was saying,” Darmoth continued, once again talking through closed lips, “it’s nice to see you smile.”

Immediately, Iza’s face fell and Darmoth regretted saying anything.

“It feels strange,” Iza admitted.

“What does?”

“Smiling.”

Final Comments: Here’s another short excerpt including characters that I created for my fantasy series. I’m actually getting really excited about focusing more on my fantasy series now!
