“It All Started At The Gas Station”

Prompt: Write a story titled “At the Gas Station”.

Philip didn’t expect that his trip to the gas station would result in him becoming a knight and riding a unicorn into battle. No one in their right mind would’ve expected such a thing.

And yet, there he was, exactly eight years later, astride a unicorn as he prepared his soldiers for battle. Their foe was formidable, outnumbering them hopelessly. They had little to no hope, and yet, Philip stood strong. He was determined to win this war. He wouldn’t let down his people.

Beside him, his queen stood, sword drawn as she prepared her own unicorn for the charge.

“What do you think?” she asked him. There was no fear in her eyes, just determination.

“I think that we need to keep hope,” he said. “All we need to do is keep them busy until our people finish clearing the city.”

The queen nodded. “We can do that.”

A roar from the enemy drew their attention. The tigers circled, deep violet pelts rippling over their muscles.

Philip’s unicorn pranced nervously and he leaned down to calm her. As he stroked her neck, he kept his eyes on the enemy. They were growing impatient; they would attack soon.

“Honey, can you go pick up some gas?”

Philip looked up to see his wife peeking around the corner and into the room.

“Mama, we’re about defeat the purple tigers!” Lily whined, sitting back on her heels with a dramatic huff.

Heather looked at Philip with a raised eyebrow and he shrugged. “She’s right.”

Heather chuckled at her husband and daughter as they returned to their game. “Alright, I’ll go get the gas.”

Twenty minutes later, she pulled up in front of the gas station where she had met the love of her life exactly eight years earlier.

Final Comments: I had a lot of fun with this one! I actually originally started writing it with the intention of it being a pure fantasy story, with some portal action or something, but I think that this version is more fun.
