“Introduction to Molecular Biology”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Molecular biology.” — suggested by Lexi
“Alright, class, let’s get started! Welcome to Introduction to Molecular Biology, or, as we like to call it, just biology. I hope you all had a great break and that your minds are fresh and ready to learn!
“So, since this is a primary level course, we will begin by discussing just what biology is and how it pertains to us molecules. I will go over the syllabus and course calendar and then we’ll jump right into our first lesson.
“Let’s begin with the syllabus. Now, I’m not going to read this out to you, because I know that you can all read it yourselves, but I will clarify some important details.
“First of all, my name is Professor H. The best ways to contact me are through Airspace, which as you know is our digital platform, or through other H-molecules. I have office hours, so don’t be shy to come and ask a question or just to say hello!
“Now, moving onto the course content. This term, we will be learning about our bodies, how we react to other molecules and elements, and how we can stay healthy. We’ll be dividing our time equally between those three topics, and yes, there will be a test for each one, as well as a cumulative end-of-term exam. Trust me, if you put in the time throughout the term to get to know the course material, the final exam will be a breeze!
“As for the course calendar, you should see it on your screens right now. You have assigned readings to complete for each class, and every second week, we will have an in-class lab assignment. We’ll also have a few guest lectures by other elements, which are super interesting. And if you’re thinking about skipping those classes already, as I know a few of you are, just know that there will be questions on the final exam about the guest lectures, so it would be in your best interest to attend.
“Now, are there any questions? No? Great, then let’s jump right into the course content.
“Today’s lecture is simple. I’ve titled it ‘H2O: Our Identities and Purpose’…”
Final Comments: I’m not sure if it was obvious that the narrator and protagonist was a molecule of water, but it was fun to write it like that anyway!
