“Into The Impossible”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
“The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.”
Arthur C. Clarke
As I stare up at the night sky, I feel something stir in my heart. I feel… like I’m supposed to go up there. Like I’m missing something in my life.
“Imagining what’s up there again?” Riley asks, coming to stand beside me.
I shrug, which he interprets as a yes.
He sighs. “Liv, you’ve got to go up there.”
I stare at him. “How?” I ask. “It’s not like I can just fly up into space. I’m only human.”
He raises an eyebrow. “Well, it’s a good thing that I’m not.”
He sweeps me into his arms and I let out a surprised yelp.
“Let me down!” I squeal, not sounding authoritative at all.
Of course, he ignores me and instead focuses on the sky above us. I let out a small gasp as I see huge, white wings extend from his back.
“What… what’s going on?” I whisper, my wide eyes fixed on the beautiful white wings that are spanning from behind my best friend.
Riley doesn’t reply and instead pushes off of the ground with a powerful leap. I let out a scream as we go streaking through the night sky.
We pass the moon in no time at all. We weave between asteroids and pass planet after planet. Soon, we’re at the very edge of our galaxy.
Riley glances down at me before looking out at the vast expanse of unexplored space. “So?” he asks expectantly.
I let out a breath shaky with excitement. “Yes,” I whisper, “let’s go.”
Riley grins down at me before taking off again, carrying me into the depths of space.

“Liv!”
I open my eyes to Riley shaking me. He looks down at me with concern.
“You dozed off again,” he whispers, glancing around nervously. “Mrs. Hungert almost caught you.”
I chuckle softly. “I’m awake now,” I reassure him.
He gives me one more warning stare before returning his attention to our math class.
On the other hand, I return my attention to something much more important: the impossible.
Final Comments: This prompt was fun, because it just left so much up to the imagination. I always love writing characters with huge imaginations; it allows for so much freedom while writing their thoughts, and you can dream of literally anything.
