“In the Forest”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
“In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.”
Aristotle
The forest behind my house always seemed to hold some sort of magic. Not the type of magic seen in fantasy novels, but more of a subdued, intrinsic type of magic.
I enjoy taking long walks through the woods, feeling the magic take hold. The forest does something to my senses. Heightens them. Brings joy to them.
As soon as I step into that forest, I’m immersed in another world.
My ears rejoice, hearing the crackle of sticks underfoot, the sweet songs of birds overhead, the rustle of leaves as the wind brushes gently past.
My eyes widen, seeing the bright green of the grass, the pops of colour of the flowers, the occasional flutter of wings.
From the touch, the smell, even the taste of fresh, clear air, my mind opens. It wanders, soaring through the trees and joining the animals in exploration. With every step, new possibilities race through my mind.
What if I could fly? Could breathe underwater? Could be nocturnal?
What if I wasn’t me?
In the forest, I’m no longer a person, a mortal being strung to this earth.
In the forest, I’m free.
Final Comments: I actually did go for a walk in a forest today. While the green grass hasn’t quite arrived yet, it was still nice to get outside and breathe in some fresh air.
