“In Silence and Chaos”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: At some point, a bird started singing along.
It was morning.
The sun was bright. The water was running. The wind was blowing.
Yet, the world was completely silent.
It was as if all the inhabitants of Earth were holding their breath, just waiting.
Waiting…
A squirrel dashed out from its home in the knot of a tree, careful not to make a sound. A leaf fluttered to the ground, sure of its path, before landing on the soft grass. A drop of water fell from the beak of a bird, silently dropping into the stream below.
Still, there was silence.
The breath was held. Seconds stretched into hours. Earth continued her work.
In silence.
The sun waved good-bye and sank beneath the hills. The moon whispered hello.
And with that single utterance, the silence was broken.
Chaos ensued.
The leaves rustled. The river gurgled. The birds screamed. The wolves howled.
Seconds stretched into hours. Earth continued her work.
In chaos.
The sky lightened. It was a warning.
The moon shrank away, no longer confident in its authority.
The sun fought off the darkness.
The silence resumed.
Final Comments: I found that this one was extremely poetic for some reason. I’m not sure why (actually, it might have been because I was just reading some poetry), but it just kind of happened naturally. I did enjoy writing in this style though!
