“His Calling”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: Write a story titled “His Calling”.
He’d always known that he was destined for great things. He didn’t know what those things were or how he’s get them, but he was convinced that he was special. He thought he deserved nothing less than the best, because he was the best.
At the very least, he thought he’d become king. Not just of his realm, but of the world. He’d made the effort to get to know his subjects, to make sure that they knew that they were talking to their future king.
They laughed at his efforts. A dirty little baker’s apprentice pretending that he’d be king? Hah, a real jest indeed.
He tolerated their laughs, because he knew that when he was king, they’d bow down to him. They wouldn’t care that he used to serve them bread; they’d be the ones serving him.
But then, his father died. No, he didn’t die; he was killed. Brutally, violently, unjustly murdered. His body had been found in the middle of the wheat field, flies buzzing around him, starting to pick apart his flesh.
The issue was raised to the royal family. The orphaned boy bowed before the very man he planned on replacing, begging for the power he did not yet have.
And the king dismissed him.
He returned, humiliated, angry, broken. In that moment, his desire to become king doubled. He understood his father’s death as a sign from the Heavens that he was to replace that worthless king.
Final Comments: I had fun writing this one! As I wrote, I think I became more comfortable with the narration style, which was nice.
