“High-Speed Chase”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
The air rushes past my face as I weave between the hills. The roaring of the engines behind me keeps my heart pumping; I need more speed.
I lean forward, but in that split second that my focus is on my speed rather than the road, my wheel hits a bump. A scream tears itself from my throat as I go flying, headfirst, toward the ground.
Just before I create a me-shaped crater in the side of the hill, something grabs me and yanks me up into the air.
“You idiot!” Hansen screams at me, his arms squeezing around my chest. “What were you thinking?”
“That I needed more speed!” I yell back, trying to stop my legs from swinging through the air as Hansen shoots upward.
“You almost got yourself killed,” he scolds me, plunging through the clouds.
“To be fair, I would’ve been dead either way if you hadn’t swooped down and picked me up,” I say. “If I didn’t go faster, they would’ve caught me. And, well, we saw what happened when I went faster.”
Even though I can’t see his face, I’m pretty sure Hansen scowls. “You’re lucky I was in the area,” he mutters.
“Yes, thank you for saving my life,” I say. “Now can we please land before I puke?”
Final Comments: I didn’t think that this one would be fun, but it turned out to be!
