“Hiding Her Tears”

This Take Ten to Write story was submitted by 12-year-old Mary. Happy reading!

Prompt: “Are you crying?”

Lily sat in the grass. She was crying. “Are you crying?” Carmen asked. “No,” Lily said. Lily tried to hide her crying all day. “Are you crying?” Amelie asked. “No,” Lily said. She kept on hiding her crying and tears all day. That was it. Her homeroom teacher, Mrs. Everly asked how she was the next day at school. “I’m okay,” Lily said. Mrs. Everly noticed her weak smile. “Maybe you’ll be happier in your other classes,” she suggested. In science, her teacher, Ms. Mina asked how she was doing too. But it was the same response that Mrs. Everly had been given. Her art teacher, Mrs. Teagan got the same response when she asked. Ms. Mila, her english teacher, asked the same thing. Ms. Aleasha, the gym teacher, asked the same thing. Later, her mother, Anna, asked how she was doing. Lily was forced to share her secret. Her sister, Valentine, asked at dinner when she didn’t eat and she shared her secret again. “It feels good to share my secret,” Lily said.
