“Heaven’s Fall”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “Heaven’s fall.” — suggested by BLu

I stare down into the ravine.

“So…” I try to formulate a sentence out of my scrambled thoughts. “That wasn’t supposed to happen, was it?”

Millie steps back before collapsing onto her knees. “No,” she whispers, her voice hoarse from screaming. “She was supposed to save us. She was the only one who could save us.”

Chelsea glances over at us. “So what does that mean?”

“It means that we’re doomed,” I say, sitting down heavily next to Millie. “Millie’s right; Heaven was the only one who could’ve fulfilled the prophecy. Without her…” I shake my head. “Soridinok is going to win. We’ve failed.”

Millie lets out a strangled sob and puts her face in her hands. I reach out and rub circles on her back. I remember losing my own sister last year; it was the most painful time of my life.

Chelsea shakes her head. “No,” she says, her voice soft but firm, “I refuse to believe that.” She stands in front of us and rams her spear into the ground. “Heaven may be gone, but that doesn’t mean that we just give up. The world is still depending on us. We can’t give up.”

I sigh. “Yeah, but Heaven was the one with the Godkiller. It’s down there at the bottom of that ravine with her right now.”

“The Godkiller was just a spear,” Chelsea says, emphasizing her words with a nod. “It was the same as your spear and my spear. If she could’ve killed Soridinok with a spear, so can we.”

Final Comments: I think I discovered a new story idea through this one!
