“Heart of Bones”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Heart of bones.” — suggested by BLu
“Where exactly are we going?” I whisper, tiptoeing after Lucis.
He turns to me with a frown and raises a single finger to his lips. I hold back a sigh as I continue following him.
The rocks gradually become more jagged as we continue our climb. The thinning air is beginning to wear on my lungs. My breaths come out in puffs of exertion as Lucis finally stops.
“We’re here,” he says with his wildly twitching fingers.
I take a final deep breath before stepping up to join him. My mouth drops.
“No way,” I whisper. “You found it?”
Lucis nods, his eyes containing a mixture of pride and fear. He knows what this means.
“Are you going to do it?” I ask. “You know that you can still back out. You haven’t told anyone other than me, have you?”
He shakes his head. “What should I do?”
I sigh and pat him on the shoulder. “You’re the one who found the Bones. Your heart will tell you what to do.”
“But I don’t know what my heart’s saying.“
“You’ll figure it out. Just like you always do.”
Final Comments: I don’t really know where this story was going… But while writing it, I did get an idea for another story!
