Take Ten to Write

“Harmless Lies”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: Show.

“Show me!” Cammy whines, tugging at my sleeve.

“No,” I say.

“Why not?”

‘Because you’re being an annoying brat’ is what I want to say, but I bite my tongue. If I call Cammy out, she’ll definitely make me pay later. That’s one thing I’ve learned; sometimes it’s better to lie to your girlfriend.

Finally, I settle on simply saying, “Because I want it to be a surprise.”

Luckily, that satisfies her. “Okay,” she says brightly before promptly changing the subject. “That reminds me; I got you something.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah! You’re going to love it. I saw it and immediately thought of you.”

“What is it?”

“It’s a surprise, silly! But I’ll give you a hint.” She leans forward until her lips are brushing my ear. “It has something to do with your favourite food of all time.”

“Ah.” My stomach turns over.

Remember when I said that sometimes it’s better to lie to your girlfriend? Well, on the flipside of that, those lies usually catch up to you. Which is why for dinner, I’ll be eating a very burnt casserole made by my girlfriend because she believes that it’s my favourite dish of all time.

Final Comments: I kind of love that the prompt prompted an entire, completely unrelated story.
