“Happiness”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.” — Dale Carnegie
“Are you happy?”
The words float in the air, echoing in my ears, taunting my dreams.
“Are you happy?”
Am I happy? That’s the real question, isn’t it? What is happiness anyway? And why would I, or anyone else for that matter, care about happiness?
Happiness is so fleeting, so mercurial. Everyone wants to be happy, but why bother when true moments of happiness are so rare? Is it worth it to live through all those moments of pain and suffering for that one second of true happiness?
“Are you happy?”
So am I happy? Should I want to be happy? What about if I deserve to be happy?
There are so many questions swirling around in my mind. My entire existence is based on making others happy (don’t get me wrong; I love my job) but what about me? This voice, this one lonely, lonely voice, is the only one that’s ever asked me about my happiness.
“Are you happy?”
Am I happy? No, I don’t think so. Not yet.
But I think I could be.
Final Comments: I was thinking about a genie granting wishes for this one. Maybe it’s because I was just listening to songs from Aladdin!
