“Just A Haircut”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: Haircut.
“Where are you going?” I ask, trailing along behind her.
“To get a haircut.”
I stop in my tracks. “You go to get your hair cut?”
She glances back at me with amusement. “Of course. Why wouldn’t I?”
I scramble to catch up to her. “Well, I don’t know. I guess I never really thought that you would do something so mundane.”
“Why not?”
“Well, because you saved the world.”
“Yeah, so? Does saving the world mean that my hair stops growing?”
“I guess not.”
She sighs. “See, this is one of the things I don’t like about all this publicity and stuff. Anyone else could’ve done what I did and I would’ve just been a nobody.”
“But you’re not a nobody. You’re the hero who saved the world.”
“I never asked to be a hero.”
“No one ever asks to be a hero.”
She sighs. “I guess. Still, I miss being a normal person who’s just one her way to get her hair cut.”
“Fair enough,” I shrug.
Final Comments: Not a lot of stories talk about what happens to the hero after the world is saved. No, actually, I’m sure there’s a lot; I just haven’t read many…
