“Growing Up”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Grow up.”
I stare at the seed.
“Why isn’t it doing anything?”
Paul peers over my shoulder. “Dunno. Shoulda done something by now.”
“It did say ‘within ten days’ on the box, right?”
“Yep.”
“And it’s been eleven days now, right?”
“Yep.”
With a sigh, I sit back, keeping my eyes glued to the seed. “Did we really get ripped off again?”
“Yep.”
I glare at Paul. “Seriously not helping.”
“Yep.” This time, he at least has the decency to smirk at me.
I return to staring at the seed. “So what do we do now?”
Paul narrows his eyes at the seed, before suddenly jumping up and shouting, “HA!”
“WHAT?!” I shout, my heart copying Paul’s movements and colliding with my ribs.
He points at the seed with a shaking finger, a huge grin spreading across his face. “We put the seed in upside down!”
“Um, what?”
“It makes sense, right? What if we put the seed in upside down and it’s growing down instead of up?”
“Excuse me?” I search Paul’s face, trying desperately to figure out if he’s pulling my leg or not. As hard as I try, I honestly can’t tell.
“Maybe if we pull out the seed, we’ll see the plant growing out the bottom!”
Final Comments: It’s been a while… But I had a lot of fun with this one! Wanted to try taking it outside the box and I think I was able to accomplish that.
