Take Ten to Write

“FutureWatcher”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “Vision.”

“Are you sure?” I whisper, crouching beside him. I keep one hand on his chest, carefully monitoring the rate of his heart, while using the other to brush his sweat-soaked hair back from his eyes.

He manages to nod, but even this slightest movement seems to be a great struggle for him.

His heart is still going steady, though his breathing seems to be slowing. For the moment, I’m not too concerned about that; FutureWatching always takes a lot of his energy and he’s probably fighting to stay awake to answer my questions right now. But my questions are important; the Superiors will want to know what he saw.

“And the East?” I ask softly, trying desperately to keep my brother awake for just a few more minutes. “Will the Boredig attack?”

His eyes flutter as he breathes, “No.”

I release a deep breath. That was the main concern of the Superiors. At least I can pass on some good news.

“But the West,” he continues, his voice barely audible now. I lean forward, my ear practically brushing his lips, to be able to hear him. “The West grows restless. I saw them, the Hinder.” Suddenly, he gasps. I jerk back to stare into his wide eyes. His face has grown pale, and his heartbeat is out of control. “The Hinder,” he rasps, still gulping for air, “they’re coming.”

He stares into my eyes for a moment more before collapsing.

Final Comments: It’s been a while since I wrote a Take Ten story… But it was nice to take a break to focus on my longer WIPs, and I feel excited again to start up Take Ten to Write again!
