Take Ten to Write

“From The Desert, She Rose”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Music prompt: “Phoenix Rising” by Michael Yang X Sami J Laine

Her boots slid against the rolling grains of sand as she struggled to keep her balance. The wind buffeted her back, ripping the fabric of her head covering from her face, exposing her to the stinging pellets of sand being whipped at her face. Tears gathered, fighting against the flecks of dirt, desperately trying to protect her delicate eyes.

Blinded and weary, she stumbled across the desert. She hadn’t had anything to drink in the past day, and her body was just about at its limit.

But Mother Nature paid her no attention. The storm raged around her, as if giving her one last reason to give up.

Finally, she sank to her knees. She admitted defeat.

As she knelt, face in her hands, unable to move, the quiet flap of wings drew her attention. A sudden burst of blistering heat scorched her hands. Her head jerked up to see the magnificent creature before her.

It was a beast of myth, an impossible dream come true. And yet here it was, hovering before her, wings of fire making the sweltering desert air even more unbearable.

It watched her, its red eyes following her every movement. The flapping of its wings dispelled the dust. It was scaring away the storm. It was saving her.

Final Comments: This was such fun music to write to. I’m not really sure why I was thinking of the desert though… Maybe some leftover idea from yesterday’s story?
