Take Ten to Write

“For Their Queen”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Rain pattered quietly on the armour of the waiting army, the only sound in the otherwise silent night. The men and women waited patiently in the cold, standing at attention. The scouts had reported that their enemy was within a half a day’s march away, so the army had begun their preparations. All soldiers were stationed at their posts on the wall, standing immobile with eyes searching the night for movement.

They were tired and hungry, wet and cold. Yet, they stood at attention.

Watching.

Waiting.

There was no question that they were frightened. They would surely be outnumbered in the coming battle, and most would likely fall.

Yet, they stood at attention.

They stood atop the wall, tasked with protecting the city behind it. A city that had just days ago been overrun by the North. A city that had been completely destroyed and burned to the ground. A city with no supplies, no weapons, no soldiers. A useless city.

Yet, they stood at attention.

They stood for their Queen. Their Queen was the opposite of this period of waiting. Warm. Loyal. Just. Generous.

The soldiers loved their Queen. And so, they were willing to give their lives for her.

Little did they know that their Queen stood among them at that very moment, waiting to die with her people…

Final Comments: I’m not sure if this story aligns with the lyrics to the music prompt, but I had fun imagining it. Fun fact: I pictured a sort of Helm’s Deep-like wall protecting the city.
