“Finding Peace”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
He sat, silent and still, next to his beloved. He took her cold hand and held it to his heart, whispered words passing through his lips. Tears landed next to her, mixing with the red of blood slowly soaking into the dirt.
He bowed his head and softly kissed her hand before resting it on her chest over her sword. He knew to let go.
I was thankful. It was always so much harder when they refused to let their loved ones go free.
He rose and trudged back toward the battlefield, his steps heavy with grief. He was on a mission to avenge his love.
My day was just beginning.
I returned my attention to the woman. Her fear was apparent, her eyes only closed because her lover had gently lowered her eyelids. She hadn’t expected the spear to come hurtling toward her heart. She hadn’t expected the pain that followed, nor the realization that those last few moments would be her last.
I went to her, slowly as to not startle her. As I knelt beside her, she woke. I placed a gentle hand over hers, the same hand that had been held just moments ago. She looked up at me, her blue eyes filled with sorrow. I did my best to comfort her, to explain to her that her time in this life was finished.
She understood. She knew that she could help her love win his own battle, but not from here. She knew that it was up to him now.
I helped her stand and I led her toward her new life.
Just before we left, I glanced back at her still body. Now, her face was relaxed and a ghost of a smile showed on her lips.
She had found peace.
Final Comments: Okay, first of all, like always, this is such a fantastic song. I highly recommend checking it out. Second, this was an interesting one to write. I had a hard time finding the right words sometimes, but I’m really happy with the general storyline.
