“Fight For What Remains”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Music Prompt: “Majesty of Justice” by Supreme Devices

The mists clear in front of you, unveiling the destruction and chaos left behind. This was once a beautiful village, populated by large, joyous families.

No village has stood here since the Army of Tyrrith passed through, completely wiping out all signs of life. Now, only the charred skeletons of buildings and people alike remain.

You slowly approach the piles of ashes, picking your way through the wasteland. Your heart feels so heavy, the lives lost here weighing on you.

Suddenly, your hair stands on end. You’re not alone.

You turn to see a single man striding toward you, his red cloak billowing behind him, mixing with the smoke. A long, pointed hood covers his face, shielding his eyes. A flash of movement catches your eye. A sword.

Instinctively, you reach for your own weapon. Your heart pounds as the man continues approaching you, your eyes fixed on the metal of his sword slicing through the smoke.

You may be a skilled fighter, but you know that even your abilities do not come close to matching those of a Soldier of Tyrrith. Still, you refuse to back down. This man may cut you down where you stand, but at least you would not have surrendered without a fight.

The red-cloaked man stops within arms reach. He stands impossibly still, the smoke clearing around him, as if he is of some superior power who may command the smoke.

His bowed head rises slowly. The hood slips down, revealing his face.

Your heart stops. You know him. You loved him.

And now, you must kill him.

Final Comments: I love writing dramatic fantasy sequences to incredible background music like this!
