“Defying Gravity”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: Write a story titled “Defying Gravity”.
“Are you sure we should be doing this?” I mutter.
“If we ‘should’ be isn’t the question,” Mark says with a frown. “The point is that we can, so why not?”
“Yeah, but we’re breaking, like, twenty laws by doing this,” Kelly says, a slight tremble in her voice.
“Aw, don’t be a baby,” Mark sighs. “We’ve went over this already. Our plan is airtight; no one’s going to catch us.”
“But still,” Kelly murmurs. Her eyes keep flickering back toward the airlock door.
Mark scowls and steps between Kelly and the door. “This was your idea,” he growls.
“It was a joke!” she exclaims, her voice fading into a whimper. “Please, Mark, can’t we just go? I really don’t want to go out there.”
The air hisses around us.
“It’s too late,” I say, shaking my head. While part of me understands Kelly’s fear, Mark’s right; it was her idea to begin with.
The hatch clicks open. Mark’s expression turns to one of pure joy as his feet leave the ground.
“This is going to be awesome,” he whispers as he leads the way out into space.
Final Comments: I should’ve only had two characters… In such a short passage, it’s a bit of a stretch to really get into the personalities of all three while trying to drive the plot forward.
