Take Ten to Write

“Corn Allergy”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “Corn.” — suggested by Bob

“By the way, we can’t have corn chips or tortillas at the party,” Natalie says as she passes.

I frown. “And why can’t we have corn chips or tortillas?”

“Because Kevin’s allergic.”

“To what?”

“Corn.”

I let out a groan and roll my eyes. “Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.”

Natalie shakes her head. “Nope. We’ve already had a few close calls with other people throwing chips at baseball games.”

I let out a long sigh. “Well, there goes Taco Tuesday,” I mutter.

“What was that?”

“Nothing.”

Honestly, Kevin is the worst. He’s snobby, he never shuts up, he hates charades, and now I guess he’s allergic to corn. Or he was always allergic to corn. Whatever.

“So what are you planning on making for the party?” Natalie asks brightly, apparently not noticing my obvious annoyance.

What am I making? What am I making? No, that’s it.

I‘m not making anything,” I snap. “You’re the one bringing your awful boyfriend, so you can figure out what to make for the party.”

Just as the words leave my mouth, my stomach begins to knot.

“Nat, I’m sorry–” I start, but she’s already walking away.

Final Comments: I’m so glad I’m not allergic to corn.
