“Connect The Dots”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
From now on, I’ll connect the dots my own way.
Bill Watterson
I stare down at the page. The numbers seem to blur together, forming an unfocused blob of ink in the middle of the paper. I try to put down my pencil, but the tip keeps missing exactly where I want it to go.
Finally, I let out a growl of frustration. I can’t do it. Not like they want me to.
I’ve had enough. I stab down my pencil, not caring on which number it lands. Then, slowly but deliberately, I drag the tip across the paper, leaving behind a smudge of lead. When the tip hits another number, I lift the pencil. I admire the line I drew between the two dots.
The puzzle doesn’t seems so hard anymore. Not when I’m making all the rules.
Suddenly, an idea forms in my mind.
What if I could connect the dots my own way in real life too? I would be invincible, unstoppable…
I would rule the world.
Final Comments: I got the idea for this one almost immediately after seeing the prompt, and while it ended up being really short, I think that it worked pretty well being short and sweet.
