“Commanding Fire”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Smoke spiraled into the sky. A single spark landed at the base of the first house.
Seconds later, it exploded.
She strode away, head held high, as the flames followed her. The heat lapped at her back, but she continued forward. She would not be intimidated by simple fire.
The flames spread, passing from house to house. The entire night lit up from the sheer brilliance of the flames.
As she walked, ash fell around her, coating her hair and clothes with a fine dust. Absentmindedly, she released a quick puff of air from the corner of her mouth to blow back her hair from her face.
She felt so confident, so powerful. She had just completed her first task. The flames would be in her command now.
Her mentor watched her carefully, evaluating her every movement. He nodded approvingly as she joined him, the flames lighting up her face.
Wordlessly, she turned to watch her creation with him. The smoke thickened into a steady fog that coated the entire sky. Every single star was blinked out of existence. The moon was suffocated by the hazy sheet of darkness.
She waited a moment more before beginning her second task. She held out a hand, summoning the flames to her.
They snaked toward her, trying their best to resist her call. Ultimately, they were no match for her power and submitted to her command. They bowed in front of her, lapping at her legs and begging for attention.
She turned to her mentor, satisfaction gleaming in her eyes. He gave a curt nod before disappearing into the night.
Turning her attention back to the fire, she held out a hand. The flame obediently slithered up her arm and settled into her palm.
She raised her chin and snapped her fingers closed. The fire let out a horrific screech.
Then, it was gone.
Final Comments: This one was actually really fun to visualize. I did get a bit stuck because I only really had a clear idea of the explosion part and nothing after that, but I think the plot turned out okay.
