“Chasing An Idea”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “Be brave enough to live life creatively. The creative place where no one else has ever been.” – Alan Alda

Her pen hovered above the page, poised and ready to begin. And yet, it hovered. It came close to kissing the page once or twice, but every time, she pulled away at the last second.

An idea was floating in her mind, as close as the page, but as far as the pen. If she could just reach out and touch it, she knew she would have a great story.

She would do it. She would reach out and grab it.

She closed her eyes and found the idea in the depths of her mind. There it fluttered in front of her, glowing in the darkness, seemingly beckoning her toward it.

With a sudden rush of determination, she leapt forward. She caught it in her hand, feeling a rush of joy run through her body. She’d done it. She’d found her next big story.

But her triumph was short-lasting. She clutched the idea in her hand, holding it close to her heart. This idea, it was so new, so different. What if no one else liked it?

It tugged at her hand and her heart, bringing her closer and closer to the edge of the cliff. She swallowed the lump in her throat as the idea began slipping from her fingers. She stretched as far as she could to keep it within her grasp until she was balanced precariously over the edge.

The idea waved at her, begged her to come with it. Her breathing increased as sweat dripped down her brow. She had to decide. The idea was slipping further and further away.

Finally, her heart decided for her. It pulled her forward the extra centimeter to reach the idea. She grabbed it as the rest of her body fell.

As the fear spiked through her, the idea suddenly exploded. It burst into light and instead of falling, she was floating.

A smile spread across her face as her pen finally touched the paper.

Final Comments: I really got into this one and ended up spending a few extra minutes on it… It was really fun though!
