“Chasing a Delicacy”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

The water rippled as the dolphin chased after his prey. Around him, other fish glided in the current he was creating. But they were too big for him to eat and, quite frankly, weren’t to his taste. What he craved was a delicacy, one that he wasn’t able to get often.

Unfortunately, his meal moved fast. It, too, was an expert swimmer and was used to being chased. That was why it was considered a delicacy by more than one species of dolphin.

Soon, others caught on that a delicacy was in their midst. The dolphin no longer chased his prey; now he fought for it.

Clicks and chatters filled the ocean as the dolphins raced toward the little fish. There were too many hunters.

As a last resort, the little fish dove into a small hole. It was a big risk; it did not know what lurked inside.

Fortunately, the hole appeared to have been abandoned. It let out a sigh; it was safe.

Seconds later, a nose poked into the hole. Sharp teeth pinched its tail and dragged it out.

It was the first dolphin. Patient as ever, he had waited for the others to leave before grabbing his meal.

Distracted by his victory, he didn’t even notice when the little fish wiggled out from between his teeth and swam off into the deep.

Final Comments: I was actually planning on writing about a literal banana dolphin, but this seemed to flow more naturally.
