“Captain’s Initiation”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
The alarms started blaring suddenly, waking Captain Brinsky from her sleep. Red light flooded through her cabin, sending jolts of panic through her.
“Cap …” Garbled static interrupted her second-in-command’s frantic voice. “… tain Brinsk … bridge … tack from near … NOW!”
Without hesitation, the captain raced out of her quarters toward the bridge. If her instincts–and her interpretation of her second’s message–were correct, this would be her first test as a captain of a starship. After all, there’s no better initiation to space than an extraterrestrial attack.
As soon as she arrived at the bridge, her crew gave her their full attention.
“Battle stations,” she said, her voice sounding strangely calm and disembodied. “Hinston, update.”
“We’ve been hit on the left side, lower decks, just above storage,” Officer Hinston replied. Though young, he was among Brinsky’s most trusted members of the crew. “No injuries to report, although our scanners have picked up that the Rudigan are preparing for another attack.”
“Then let’s beat them to it.” The captain settled into her chair, fingers grasping her arm rests. “Let’s hit them where it hurts.”
Final Comments: I was just thinking that I wanted to write a sci-fi story soon, and this music fit perfectly!
