Take Ten to Write

“Canada Day Party”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “It’s Canada Day!”

“Is everything ready?” I ask, racing around the yard. “Decorations, food, activities, everything is set up, right?”

A single, muffled affirmation is shouted back at me, which does little to reassure me.

“Come on, guys, let’s move!” I shout. “The guests are going to be here soon!”

Red and white fly through the air as I help put the finishing touches onto the decorations. Flags and little paper maple leaves and streamers and balloons… Everything is finally put in its place.

Next, I head over to double check that the poutine and beaver tail stands are fully stocked. Of course I also check that the equally important drink stands are almost overflowing; after all, it wouldn’t do to have my guests pass out from dehydration.

Finally, I stop by the various activity stands. While the adults are standing around and chatting, the children need to have something to do! I almost get caught at the face painting stall, but force myself to leave to finish overseeing the rest of what needs to be done.

After a round of triple checking every single detail, I’m finally satisfied. I pause for a moment beside the gate and adjust my shirt, checking for sweat stains. There aren’t any, so I take a deep breath before flinging open the doors and welcoming my neighbours to my Canada Day party.

Final Comments: Happy Canada Day!
