“Where’s your backpack?” Mia asked her sister, Sophia. “What!” asked Sophia. “I can’t hear you!” “Where’s your backpack?” Mia repeated. “Can you hear me?” “No,” Sophia said quietly. “Can you hear me?” was the only phrase Sophia understood.
“Okay Sophia. Your turn. What fraction if the pie is this?” asked the teacher, pointing to the board. “That cake is cut into 16 slices.” Sophia replied. “Yes, but what fraction of the pie is that?” her teacher replied. Sophia’s response was “16 slices.” “Incorrect!” her teacher exclaimed. “Can’t you hear me?” “The pie is cut into 8/16ths. “Okay, what about this one?” “There, the pizza is cut into 3/7ths,” Sophia’s classmate Clara responded. “Correct!” Sophia’s teacher exclaimed. Sophia was surprised that Clara got it right. She decided to think about things for a little while.

Sophia sat down in a quiet place in front of the fountain next to her school.
First, she thought about how she couldn’t hear. She thought about how she was born, so she got disabilities, which is causing her to not be able to hear. Next, she thought about when she was born. She thought to herself, What gave me disabilities when I was born? Why? She then thought about why she could not hear, and who could help her improve that. She thought to herself, I could hear much better if I had someone to help me! She then decided it was time to go home.

She knew that her mom was someone who could help her, being born was when she got disabilities happened, having disabilities was why she could not hear, being different from others was what she hated, and how she could improve her hearing skills. She thought to herself, I can hear if I try harder! Couldn’t I? Would I, would I be special if I could hear? That would be, that would be magnificent!
