“Burning Bridges”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: Burn.

I wish I knew how the fire started. Of course, most people probably want to know how the fire that destroyed their home began, but I have a suspicion already of who it might’ve been. You see, I’ve had a longstanding feud with Mel Dormer, the CEO of Bamboo Bridges. He’s the only one who knew about my new bridge idea before I started my own company, and then he just went and stole it! I’m telling you, he wouldn’t have been able to build a bridge empire without my idea to begin with!

Now, my house is gone, burnt beyond recognition. I’m not about to go to the police to have Mel arrested, but I’m also not going to let the matter go. I’m going to confront him and settle this once and for all.

I know now that I probably should’ve thought the matter through a bit more before acting, but when you’re angry, things just seem to happen, right?

Well, here I am, standing beside the burnt remains of one of my bridges. Okay, so it’s one of Mel’s bridges, but it was still my initial design.

I know I shouldn’t have burnt it without proof. Fine, maybe I shouldn’t have burnt it at all. But I couldn’t just pretend that nothing happened.

So here we are now, Mel and I, beside a burnt bridge. I just wish I knew who set fire to my home.

Final Comments: Another handwritten story. This one was a bit hard to think about and get the wording right…
