“Back in the Tower”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “Alone in a locked tower.” — suggested by E.L. Stew

It’s happened again. I’m back in the tower.

Don’t ask me how. The truth is, I don’t know how I always end up back here. But it’s the exact same thing. One, seemingly random night, I’ll get picked up and put back here.

I haven’t seen another living creature in over five years now. My guess is that whenever I get close to someone or something else, I get picked up and brought back. The weird thing is, I always wake up back in the tower. It’s not like I’m just randomly pulled out of wherever I am. I always fall asleep first.

But something else is different today. The door. It’s locked.

It’s never been locked before. I’ve always been able to leave before. But not today.

I can’t help but think that this is all a part of some strange, twisted experiment. That I’m a specimen under examination. Then again, if that were the case, there must’ve been some signs out there, right? Or am I really so blind that I’ve been missing them?

Nonetheless, I’m back in the tower again. I’m locked inside, with no key and no way to escape. And I’m alone.

This is a great way to start off my birthday.

Final Comments: For some reason, I had a really hard time with this one…
