Take Ten to Write

“At the End of the Day”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: Write a story titled “At the End of the Day”.

At the end of the day, the sun set, as per usual. The moon and stars rose and the night came to life.

Everything was the same. Everything, except for one thing.

There was no sound. The world was completely and utterly silent. No chirping of birds, no rustling of trees, no honking of horns, no nothing. Even footsteps fell silently, crunching noiselessly over brittle leaves.

Cats slunk through the shadows, imperceptible save for their bright eyes peering out at the mice scuttling across the street. The mice still scuttled, aware that they were being followed through scent alone. They weaved through the stomping feet as they splashed through the shallow puddles lining the sidewalk.

The feet continued their march through the rain and the darkness. They were on a mission. A mission to somewhere. To nowhere. To everywhere. It depended on the feet.

The street, the city, the country, the world. Everything was silent. Not a single noise was made that night.

But did the world fall silent, or did everyone just stop listening?

Final Comments: I have absolutely no idea what I was writing about. At one point, it was just a ramble…
