“Another World Awakens”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
The sun sets over the city.
As the day closes, another world awakens. This world lives in the darkness, lurking in the shadows.
The rodent-like grunns shuffle through the streets, sinking their little claws into any piece of garbage in sight. Luckily for them, garbage is plentiful in the city. They greedily stuff their treasures into their mouths to save for later. With winter fast approaching, they must collect all the garbage possible now so that they won’t need to leave the safety of their nests during the cold season.
Not too far away, the habbot pixie flutters from window to window, looking for a suitable perch. They enjoy bathing in light, including artificial light from lamps. However, if all lights are turned off, they turn instead to the white glow of the moon.
But the moon also attracts more dangerous creatures. The ostri glide soundlessly through the night, searching for any pixies who have strayed out into the open. Its eyes pierce through the darkness of the night, able to spot even the slightest of movements from a pixie’s wing. Long, streamlined wings help it move swiftly, and a sharp, curved beak lets it snap up its prey.
Final Comments: Today, I started watching the Netflix documentary series Night on Earth. You can probably see where I got my inspiration for this story…
