“Another Harvest Day”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: Harvest.

“Gal, it’s Harvest Day! Wake up, wake up, wake up!”

I groan and roll over, pushing my face into my pillow. I hate Harvest Day. It’s just so tedious, harvesting, and harvesting, and harvesting, and wait, guess what? Yep, harvesting. All. Day. Long.

I really don’t understand why Skye is so excited. It’s not even like it’s her first Harvest Day.

“Come on, Gal! Get up!”

She pounces on top of me and starts jumping up and down. I’m fairly certain she’s going to break all my bones, so I shove her off. She lets out a squeal as she hits the floor. Immediately, she’s back on her feet and running out the door screaming, “Mom! Gal pushed me!”

I roll my eyes and agonizingly push myself out of bed. Before Mom has a chance to come pounding on my door to scold me for ‘being mean to my baby sister’ I’m dressed and out the door.

“Mornin’, Gal,” Dad calls to me from the yard.

“Morning,” I reply, stifling a yawn.

Dad chuckles and ruffles my hair. “Escaping from Mom, are you? Heard Skye screaming her head off.”

I let out a sigh. “She’s always screaming her head off.”

Dad chuckles some more before handing me a sickle. “Happy Harvest Day, by the way.”

I stare at the sickle in my hand. “You know I hate Harvest Day.”

Dad just shrugs before walking back into the field. “Everyone’s got to help, you know.”

I trudge after him and stop at the edge of the field. The wheat literally never stops. My arms hurt just thinking about harvesting all of it.

It’s going to be another very long Harvest Day.

Final Comments: This one was just kind of meh.
