“Another Friend”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: Like.
“It’s not that I don’t like him,” I protest. “He just… I don’t know.”
Val glances back at Nate. “I still think that you should give him a chance. I don’t know, invite him to tag along with us for lunch or something.”
“Why? We’re not friends with him.”
“Well I am.”
I frown. “Since when?”
She shrugs. “Like a year ago? I don’t know.”
“So you’re telling me that you’ve been friends with the school’s biggest flirt for the past year and I, your best friend, never realized this?”
“Sure, something like that.”
“Does Brennan know?”
Val rolls her eyes. “No,” she says dryly, “my boyfriend doesn’t know that I’m friends with another guy. Of course he knows!”
“How come Brennan gets to know and I don’t? I thought that best friend trumps boyfriend!”
“Well duh. Brennan’s friends with Nate too.”
“He is?”
“Yes, he is.” Val sighs and throws me a sidelong glance. “You do know that Brennan has some male friends too, right?”
This time, I throw her an exasperated glance.
Final Comments: This one was inspired by part of one of my WIPs. It just adds a bit more detail that I never explicitly say in the novel.
