“A World Under Water”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Think of your favourite place by the coast. Describe the scene if the sea level were 22 metres higher.” — from plot-generator.org.uk
The coast. Water, lots of it. It’s blue, shimmering and sparkling in the sunlight. It’s right at my feet, lapping over my shoes, trying to drag me down.
It wasn’t always this way. The sea level rose by 22 metres over the last few years due to global warming and the melting of the ice caps. Now, the only way we can survive is if we stay on the mainland. Way on the mainland, far, far away from where the ocean used to be.
A lot of the sea life has made its way up onto what used to be our land, taking full advantage of our abandoned houses and properties. Now, all humans are bunched up (as if we weren’t already crowded before). The world has crowned a new king: the whale.
Honestly, it’s kind of cool, seeing all these sea animals so close. My only complaint is everyone else left on Earth. The non-sea animals. The ones who are stuck together, like sardines in a can. Funny how that happens, isn’t it? We used to use sardines as a metaphor for being squished together, and now look at all the space they’ve got. I guess that serves us right for messing up the planet.
I mean, of course we’ve built huge ships and stuff to live on all this new water that we’ve got. It’s just kind of inconvenient. I mean, the shipyards themselves were mostly all abandoned when the water levels started rising, seeing as they were on the coast and all, so we’re left with only a few functioning ships at the moment. Most of them are cruise ships, which can house a fair number of people. The problem is that it’s still not enough, and we don’t have the resources to build more.
So, there you have it. That’s what’s going on in this crazy world today. Exciting, isn’t it? Well, if you think that it’s going to get any better, just you wait. Sure, better technology is going to come into play pretty soon I’d imagine, but I don’t think that humans as a species have the time for that. Because we’re running out of time and resources. Soon, the Earth will truly belong to the sea. And there’s nothing we can do about it. At least, not anymore.
Final Comments: While today’s plot wasn’t super defined and it definitely didn’t flow very easily, I still found it pretty fun to write.
