Take Ten to Write

“Saving a Brother”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

The mud squelched beneath Kanter’s boots as he trudged upward toward the billowing smoke. Each footstep felt as though it took the most effort in the world. Still, he continued on. He continued on toward the smoke. The smoke that was in the complete opposite direction than the love of his life.

He knew that Gangius would be cursing him right now. “What are you doing?” he would’ve said. “Why are you coming to rescue me when you could be halfway to Pandris by now? You do realize that I’m most likely already dead, right?”

But Kanter couldn’t justify abandoning his best friend. Not when Gangius had done so much to help him. Gangius had believed in him more than anyone ever had. They were more than friends; they were brothers.

Another explosion rang out ahead, flinging balls of dirt into Kanter’s face. His instincts kicked in and he dropped to the ground, covering his head with his arms. Only when the ground stopped shaking did he dare uncover his face.

His breath came out in trembling gasps. Even after years of being in the field, Kanter never felt prepared for sudden Sculpts.

A cold chill ran through him, making his fingers and toes tremble. A sudden Sculpt. A Chromancer was nearby.

Final Comments: I feel like it’s a bit difficult to write a short excerpt that makes sense when so much of the larger story only currently exists in my mind…
