“A History Lesson”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
“No heirloom of humankind captures the past as do art and language.”
Theodore Bikel
Michael hated museums. He thought that looking at a bunch of old, dirty things was a waste of time and that he would much rather be playing video games.
That was, of course, until he saw the sculptures move.
Michael had been on a school field trip to the local history museum. He’d snuck his portable gaming system onto the school bus so that he could play while they were walking around in the museum. Unfortunately, Mrs. Hinkleton was on duty and she caught him almost immediately. So, when they finally reached the museum after a long, dull bus ride, Michael had no choice but to pay attention to what the guide was saying.
Or, at least, that’s what Mrs. Hinkleton thought would happen by taking away Michael’s games. In reality, Michael still couldn’t care less about everything in the museum, and so, he still didn’t pay attention. Instead, he looked around at each exhibit, imagining that they would come to life and fight each other like in his video game.
Only one of those two things happened.
Final Comments: Another short one… I wasn’t really sure how far I wanted to take the plot, which slowed down the actual writing process by quite a bit. In the end, though, I liked the general idea of sculptures coming to life and showing history… oh wait, those are just movies aren’t they…?
